Dr. Ryan Enright is recognized for his organ playing and improvising and he has performed organ recitals in Canada and the United States. Enright enjoys performing organ repertoire from around 1540 to the present day, attempting to approach each period of music in an informed and expressive way. During the church service he treats the hymns with creativity and improvises to adorn the service.
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Enright studied the organ with Marc-André Doran, who instilled in him a passion for organ playing and for the larger musical repertoire. Additional, Ryan studied organ with Gaston Arel and Jean LeBuis while enrolled at the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique. Enright received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees—and Artist Diploma—in organ performance from McGill University. His teacher for the first two degrees was John Grew and, for the third, William Porter. Enright received the DMA in Organ Performance & Literature from the Eastman School of Music (2012), where he studied repertoire and improvisation with William Porter and played harpsichord and organ continuo for Eastman’s Collegium Musicum. Enright has studied improvisation with William Porter and Julian Wachner, and has taken workshops with Gerre Hancock, Thierry Escaich, Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, and Christophe Mantoux.
Enright has competed internationally, receiving first prizes at the Canadian Music Competition (1997), Quebec Organ Competition (2004), and National Organ Playing Competition of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (2007). He was a finalist in the CIOC (Canadian International Organ Competition), 2011.
Enright relocated to Sacramento in October of 2011 to become Organist of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Accompanist for the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, Sacramento State’s choirs, and the Schola Cantorum of Sacred Heart Church. In August of 2016 Dr. Enright recorded an album entitled “St. John’s Resounds” with virtuoso harpist Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoehn. Recorded at St. John’s on the splendid Bedient organ, the album consists of Rachel Laurin’s “Fantasy for organ and harp” and solo organ and harp works. In California, Enright has performed at churches in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento. He has also performed in the state of Washington and New York. In the summer of 2013, Enright accompanied the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra (SCSO) on their tour of Italy (Venice, Lucca, and Rome). At St. Peter’s Basilica, Enright played solos at communion (an improvised fughetta with “O Canada” as a fugue subject—it was July 1 after all!) and Bach’s Fugue in F, BWV 540, for postlude. In 2015, he accompanied the SCSO again, this time to Northern France, Paris, and England, performing a grand improvisation in French Classical style and other period music on the great 1741 Parisot organ in Normandy. (The improvisation can be found on YouTube.) He also had the honor of accompanying the SCSO from the choir organ of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris.
As of Fall 2018 Enright added Accompanist I at California State University, Sacramento to his duties, where he accompanies the three classical choirs, two voice studios, and the Opera Theatre Workshop. Since 2021 he has been Co-Dean of the American Guild of Organists, Sacramento Valley Chapter, with Dr. Lars Gjerde. Ryan’s passions away from the organ loft include hiking, camping, Argentine Tango, and whitewater kayaking.

À l’automne 2018, Enright a ajouté Accompanist I à la California State University, Sacramento, à ses fonctions, ou il accompagne les trois choeurs classiques, les deux studio vocales et l’Opera Theatre Workshop. Depuis 2021, il est co-doyen de l’American Guild of Organists, Sacramento Valley Chapter, avec le Dr. Lars Gjerde.
